The one constant in my work has been my love of metal. Over years of making sculpture I have used steel, stainless steel, brass, bronze, aluminum, silver and gold in everything from large scale public sculpture and architectural detailing to more traditional furniture pieces for the home. Over the past few years my approach to making sculpture has changed. I have moved away from functional furniture forms to explore the metaphor of “Time” as sculpture. My fascination with time as a metaphor began with a collection of descriptive phrases like “Times up” and “ Tee Time”, or is it “Tea Time”. The collection of phrases number more than 150 and is still growing. Within this collection I have found a window through which I can view our culture. The images that emerge are sometimes humorous, while others are more cutting satire. In a small book of technical notes, and queries titled “Earth House Hold” by Gary Snyder I came across this quote. “That which includes all change never changes; without change, time is meaningless; without time, space is destroyed. Thus we arrive at the void.” Time, space, change; it sure has given me much food for thought. I still love metal and I have a better understanding of wood, glass, and clay.
